As a modern historian, almost all my primary data is time-specific down to the day or month, so I got into the habit of naming my files according to a strict YYYY.MM.DD format. One way in which I use smart groups is to auto-sequence my archival data chronologically. Each seminar, interview, book, journal and archive file thus has a group of its own everything I know about or learn from that source, and frequently the source itself in PDF, JPG or DOC form, is in there.ĭevonThink also has, alongside its normal groups, the ability to create "Smart Groups", which automatically collate data from anywhere in the database matching a given set of boolean conditions. In my "Library" group, I have a group per book or article, listed by author/date of publication. With archives, I usually replicate the filing structure of the archive itself, as this helps with citation later on. "British Library", "The National Archives, UK"), and within that, one group per source I consulted from that repository. I allocate one group for each physical repository I consulted (e.g. In my "Archives" group, my substructures usually mimic those of the archives I visited. The bulk of material in my PhD database is contained in two groups: primary material ("Archives") and secondary material ("Library"). An expanded version of this essay is available on my blog (the URL for which is appended below).ĭevonThink's flexible filing structure is one of its biggest attractions for me: it allows you to create any root file structure you wish, beginning with the most basic unit, a "group". Given limited space, I can only touch on three of the many useful features of DevonThink: flexible filing, smart groups, and textual concordance. I therefore offer the following as just one example of how DevonThink can be used for history research. What I found most helpful when getting started was to look at as many examples of how others had used DevonThink that I could find. There are thus as many database configurations as there are people in the world: each one a unique reflection of the brain which produced it. The beauty (and terror) of DevonThink is that opening a new database is like staring into a slate grey abyss: DevonThink allows you to fashion pretty much any folder structure you like, to impose any order you wish upon your data universe. DevonThink was designed to be a solution to the problem of managing the data we collect, and its ultimate solution is to 'go paperless': every scrap of your research can be transformed into bytes and deposited into the database, to be retrieved with mere keystrokes. It's extraordinarily permissive: DevonThink will take text files, Word documents, PDFs, JPGs, PNGs, web bookmarks, RSS feeds and more. It's an incredibly smart, flexibly structured, fully searchable database, a one-stop container into which one can deposit all manner of research material. Consolidating this untidy sprawl has become a problem in itself, one to which scholars usually apply themselves only incidentally in the actual task of research.ĭevonThink is a piece of research management software for Macintosh. We work with a scruffy assortment of research formats: typed notes, PDFs and archive photographs alongside microfilm printouts, photocopies, and a scrawl of illegible notes from that one archive on your research trip that wouldn't let you bring in your laptop. Yet, we today are a transitional generation of historians strung between physical and digital worlds. With the increasing ubiquity of digital archives has come the expectation that we must use them with rapid advances in search technology has come the requirement that our research be more comprehensive than ever before. In an age of information overload and technological advance, our research methods are rapidly changing. Open with the ShadowHawk, follow up with the Dragon and Thunderbolt, and by now the target is hopefully on its back for the Black Knight to make an attempt at blowing its head off. Going back to the drawing board, I can get 2x LRM15 onto a normally armored Shadow Hawk (760 armor) with a reasonable amount of ammo. My default assault lance is two double AC/20 brawlers, a 4 LL headshot specialist, and an LRM60 boat. This pattern holds up for the endgame, too. Ideally, the first or second brawler knocks it down, giving you one or two chances to subsequently score a free head shot. So the ideal knockdown lance starts with the LRM boat unloading on a target for some general damage and to get it wobbly. AC/20s do precise, huge damage AND huge stability damage. So with a brawler and 3 LRM boats, you've only got one mech capable of effectively exploiting knockdowns, and it's probably busy tanking.Īssuming you're at the heavy stage of the game, the best set up for knockdowns would be some Orions with a single AC/20 apiece and an LRM boat. It won't hit called shots with any precision. As a practical matter, it's hard to set up more than one knockdown per round, and once you have a target flat on its back, an LRM boat is probably the worst thing to take advantage. If your LRM boats get caught by the enemy, you're in for a bad time.Īside from that, if your goal is to exploit knockdowns for victory and salvage, it still seems pretty sub-optimal. Well, it's more that they changed something with the program that generates a lot of extra disk access on initial load, it's just not as noticeable on an SSD drive due to the faster access speeds.īefore I do something completely idiotic, how stupid is it to build out a lance with one heavy brawler for spotting and 3 minimally armored mediums equipped with LRM20s for long range destabilization/headshots? Is this an inherently stupid idea? When I started playing again, I just started making coffee during the intro to get around it, which isn't ideal. Generally th edelay is somewhere in the 4-6 minute range. Given the volume of people who experienced it, I imagine it's somewhere near the top of the queue. They put a note out eventually saying the delay was related to the game being installed on a non-SSD drive, and that they were working on it. Yeah, I was one of.a few.people who posted to the relevant bugs thread over on the HBS Battletech forum. Though I usually pull that mod's releases from GitHub rather than nexus. In the meantime, a mod called BattletechPerformanceFix eventually added their own fix for it. They supposedly have a fix but weren't able to get it out before the holidays. The long delay on the HBS logo was a bug introduced with Flashpoint. I don't think this was ever an issue until I bought Flashpoint the other day and started playing again. It will just freeze there and become listed as non-responding. If you get past the surface, there's literally no era of the Inner Sphere where this isn't true.ĭoes anyone else have an issue with Battletech hanging up at the studio logo? That's a lot more interesting than a "Euro/SE-asian cliché cultures vs neo-Mongolians with faux-Aztec aesthetics" deathmatch. I don't know all that much about the lore, but at whatever point in time the current game is set at, it feels like the galaxy is boiling pot full of minor wars, political intrigue, and shifting alliances. Nevertheless, they can deliver painful stings.Ĭlimate change has caused rising ocean temperatures, which are changing where certain dangerous jellyfish can be found. They are actually colonial organisms made up of polyps. Portuguese Man-of-War are not technically jellyfish. The more dangerous jellyfish species live in Australia, the Philippines, the Indian Ocean, and the central Pacific Ocean. Only some jellyfish stings, such as those from Box Jellyfish (the most deadly), Lion’s Mane Jellyfish, and Sea Nettle, can be very serious. Jellyfish stings cause more harm in people with weak immune systems, elderly people, and children. Normally, they will cause red marks, tingling, itching, or numbness. Jellyfish stings are painful, but in most cases, they are mild and are not too serious. It’s also possible to be stung by a dead jellyfish that has washed up on the shore, so always watch your step on the beach. Still, jellyfish do sting people from time to time, usually by brushing against swimmers, surfers, or other water recreation enthusiasts. They mostly use their stinging tentacles to catch and eat their dinner. Jellyfish don’t generally intend to sting humans. Because they contain so much water, Jellyfish die quite fast after they wash up on a beach. Stormy weather and strong winds can also bring jellyfish to shore, and they can end up on the beach. They float with the current, which means that if the current comes to shore, jellyfish may come too. They do not have brains, blood, or hearts, though they do have nervous systems that help them respond to their surroundings. These creatures are actually made up of about 95% water. Jellyfish are actually related to corals and sea anemones, and are part of the phylum cnidocytes. Here’s everything you need to know about jellyfish at the beach:ĭespite their name, jellyfish are not fish (nor are they made of jelly). Jellyfish are beautiful to look at from a safe spot, but if you meet one up close, their tentacles can leave a nasty sting. Jellyfish can be found all over the world, from tropical to arctic waters. Grey means there is no current water quality information, the beach is under construction, there has been an event that has rendered water quality information unreliable or unavailable. Red means the water at the site has water quality issues or there is an emergency. This status does not indicate current water quality. This means that this site has been issued a Blue Flag status for the current swimming season. We may manually set the status for a specific beach if we have concerns about the sampling protocol, if there is an emergency, if monitoring practices don't exist or have recently changed, or other reasons that render this site "special." Red means the beach failed water quality tests 40% of the time or more. Yellow means the beach passed water quality tests 60-95% of the time. Green means the beach passed water quality tests 95% of the time or more. This means that rather than displaying current data it displays the beach's average water quality for that year. When swimming season is over or when a beach's water quality data has not been updated frequently enough (weekly) it goes into historical status. Grey means water quality information for the beach is too old (more than 7 days old) to be considered current, or that info is unavailable, or unreliable. Red means the beach’s most recent test results failed to meet water quality standards. Green means the beach’s most recent test results met relevant water quality standards. Great Song from Blue Valentines, with an excellent walking feel to the bass. Here and elsewhere, with obtuse passages (and loud silences) about Trump, Skidelsky is, at best, whistling past the graveyard. Whistling Past the Graveyard by Screamin Jay Hawkins was written by Tom Waits and was first released by Tom Waits in 1978. Played by a precocious Taylor Paige Henderson, Earwig is unusually self-obsessed for the heroine of a kid’s movie, and Goro Miyazaki never shies away from the sense that his protagonist is just a few magic powers away from being the god-like twerp from that “Twilight Zone” episode who made everyone do his bidding. Musgraves only has a few lines of dialogue, but “Earwig” makes use of her talents in a song that proves crucial to the plot, and this delightfully unexpected crossover event typifies a movie that’s willed to life by its voice cast even when everything else about it feels zombified on screen (this review is based off the English-language dub).Īlas, things settle into a stale groove once Earwig - renamed Erica Wig by her adoptive caretakers - starts her new life at the orphanage. A curly-haired woman bombs down a moonlit highway on her motorbike as she tries to shake the clown car full of bad guys who are racing to keep up (the radiator of their vehicle softens into tentacles with such an unmistakably Ghibli wiggle that it might leave fans with an ounce of false hope).Īnd it’s a good thing she gets away in one piece, because our girl is carrying some precious cargo: A newborn baby named Earwig, who’s left on the doorstep of a British orphanage with a cassette tape that bears her name and a note from her mom that reads “Got the other 12 witches chasing me, I’ll be back when I’ve shook them off.” You’d be wise to ignore the tantalizing backstory this prologue seems to bake into the plot (the rest of the movie certainly does), and focus instead on the fact that Earwig’s mother is voiced by psych-country superstar and outspoken Ghibli fan Kacey Musgraves. The trouble starts with the source material - as Jones’ plot-light book creates a space for the imagination that Goro Miyazaki’s adaptation fills in for its audience - but the film begins on its strongest foot. To that end, many of the the visual motifs in “Earwig” - from its sunny English setting to the big-haired matrons who rule over its musty Victorian houses - call such direct and specific comparison to Ghibli iconography that it sometimes feels as if Goro Miyazaki wasn’t trying to make a new movie so much as he was trying to build a wax monument to several old ones.īut “Earwig,” which, in all fairness, was made for Japanese television and produced on a budget to match, would have been bottom-of-the-barrel Ghibli even if it were the most gorgeous thing the studio had ever churned out. The paper-thin story about a precocious young witch who’s adopted by a magical couple and befriends their talking black cat is so broadly reminiscent of “Kiki’s Delivery Service” that the film can’t help but feel defined by the same past it’s trying to pave over. Directed by Miyazaki’s son, Goro (whose maligned “Tales from Earthsea” and wistful “From Up on Poppy Hill” have made him something of a pariah among Ghibli fans, and called frequent attention to his fraught relationship with his dad), “Earwig” is based on a children’s novel by Diana Wynne Jones, the same author the elder Miyazaki adapted for “Howl’s Moving Castle.” This is the cartoon equivalent of that botched Jesus fresco, only lacking the human touch that gave that debacle some perverse charm of its own.Īnd “Earwig and the Witch” is nothing if not eager to be seen in the context of the Ghibli classics that came before it. While “Earwig and the Witch” is far from the ugliest film of its kind, there’s something uniquely perverse about seeing Ghibli’s signature aesthetic suffocated inside a plastic coffin and sapped of its brilliant soul about seeing the studio’s lush green worlds replaced by lifeless backdrops, and its hyper-expressive character designs swapped out for cheap dolls so devoid of human emotion that even the little kids look Botoxed with an inch of their lives. To watch “ Earwig and the Witch” - Studio Ghibli’s first fully 3D computer-generated feature, and its first feature of any sort since the informal pause that followed 2014’s “When Marnie Was There” - is to know how Miyazaki felt that day. The Spyder4Elite uses a single sensor that calibrates the color on your photographs or video clips using colors that cover the full spectrum so that you can duplicate the true-to-life colors you are seeing in real life and not be saddled with muted and even distorted color. The Spyder4ProS4P100 is the cheaper of the two models and comes with a standard one year warranty it an excellent choice for professional photographers, especially for those who need to be able to replicate consistency between prints and what they are working with on their screen. The other features such as the wide aperture, the honeycomb baffle and the diffuser can be helpful as well. This device can easily be placed on your display in order to get accurate readings. The fact that it is also being used by photographers can be helpful too. If you would like a great tool that can work for digital photographs, the Spyder4Pro can be the item to use. The ReCal feature is known to be the right type of feature to use if you would like to standardize the display especially if there are some changes that you made to it over time. There are various settings that can be changed when it comes to the calibration to suit your current preference The Spyder4Pro comes with a step-by-step calibration wizard that is designed to help the device users regulate their display, this will easily define the type of display being used, the model and the current calibration system. This Spyder also comes with a Monitor Quality Analysis tool that allows users to fine tune their displays to allow for the maximum control over your color management. There is also a simple upgrade package that you can purchase for the Spyder4ProS4P100 that allows you to connect the device to your television and enhance the picture quality and color on your television screen. This 4 th generation sensor has an amplified accuracy of round 26% over other color enhancers and is well-matched with LED display screens, CRT monitors, laptops, iPads and iPhones among others. This particular color enhancer includes an ambient light sensor that adjusts the display luminance. The Spyder4Pro has lots of features that make it the ideal light meter for professional photographers to use. The only problem that you are left with is trying to decide which to buy – the Spyder4EliteS4EL100 or the Spyder4ProS4P100. Calibrating photographs and video files can be something of a nightmare, but the datacolorSpyder series provides photographers, perfectionists, videographers and even video editors with color control that can be used with monitors, laptops, projectors, iPads and even iPhones. “Elizabeth feels confident that Kate will make a great queen.
